Description

"Astra" is conceived as the return from a long scientific voyage centered on the observation of celestial bodies—*astre* (or *astrum* in Latin) denoting "any natural celestial body." It is a cosmic journey in which our sense of wonder encounters the most magnificent celestial phenomena. It begins with an explosion of stars scattered across the black background of an aluminum plate, evoking the Big Bang—the creation of the Universe. The expedition continues through a series of stellar phenomena: supernovae, chromospheres, photospheres, and eclipses. Each is meticulously photographed and retouched in the studio of this "artist-astronaut," who tirelessly navigates the boundary between the plausible and the imagined.
Deeply rooted in a vision of the cosmos, Sandrine Elberg pushes her exploration beyond the infinitely large and the infinitely small, blurring the lines of what constitutes "real" astral photography.
Her experimental photographs bear witness to our capacity to reconfigure the cosmos beyond the visible realm—where specks of dust can transform into starry nights, and mold can become a planetary system.
In a sense, the artist’s stellar odyssey is reminiscent of the landing in Georges Méliès’ *A Trip to the Moon* (*Le Voyage dans la Lune*), featuring Professor Barbenfouillis and his fellow astronauts. — Salomé d'Ornano
